Even though QR codes have been around since 1994, they couldn’t have been more relevant than they are now. Most people are mistaken when they assume that QR codes are restricted only to payment transactions. Today, they transcend the industry boundaries and have ushered in a revolution across sectors. One such example is the travel and tourism space. No other industry suffered a greater hit than travel, tourism, and hospitality when Covid-19 hit. In the wake of the global pandemic, and the challenges it has brought forth, QR codes have become a critical pillar and much-welcomed tool for reviving travel and tourism as they allow travellers to have touchless transactions and skip traditional queue through facilities provided by QR codes.
QR codes also have the ability to keep up-to-date health and travel data such as travel history, health conditions during travel, and visit records. In an effort to have touchless or contactless transactions, the travel, and hospitality sectors offer online tourist travel passes, QR code menus (in hotels, airports, restaurants, etc.), contact tracing (for their benefit), hotel check-ins, portals for travel-related information, image QR code landmarks, and more. Now travellers do not need physical copies of tickets or boarding passes (in case of airport travel) – while many of these facilities were yet to be acknowledged or used pre-Covid-19, but they could not be more significant now.

The travel industry faces several challenges in converting the traffic that comes through the government portals that heavily market destinations and it’s difficult to convert that traffic into transactions.
The Tech Panda spoke to entrepreneur, business leader, and investment banking and IT expert, Viineit Toshniiwal, who is also the Founder of Bizzo, a startup helping entrepreneurs create sophisticated booking portals to help automate the intake of bookings 24×7 and ensure that a booking-related query is never missed out on.
Toshniiwal truly believes that the government and the travel industry need to push the gears for development of micro businesses. He says it’s the need of the hour to organise the manner in which SMBs are digitising themselves.
“SMBs tend to depend a lot on the aggregators for bringing business, which compromises the brand. As a result, they have to shell out huge commissions without customer data. So, direct approaches by customers lead to businesses saving on commissions with collection of valuable customer data,” he explains.

The next decade is going to be all about unbundling and using open architecture-based systems that brings autonomy to small and independent businesses.”

Bizzo’s funding announcement is in tandem with several other developments in the market that continue to create a more conducive environment for tech-led innovation in open digital commerce. Chief among these is the government of India’s Open Network of Digital Commerce (ONDC) initiative. An open architecture-based UPI-like platform for trade in goods and services, major financial institutions such as ICICI Bank, SBI & CSC have already announced significant investments in ONDC. Bizzo’s vision is, thus, aligned with the overall market direction as it aims to develop a universal seller-side app to facilitate the digitisation of services.
